Reverse Memes can be very simply described as taking a current meme and completely altering its character to the opposite of the original.

The reverse effect can be applied to almost any meme, and generally appear as isolated macros rather than taking on life of their own. However, Reverse Memes aren’t solely limited to pictures, and can appear in text form as well. A couple of examples would be someone with the name Newfag Triforcing, or people saying “Candlejack” without then being cut off.

Reverse Memes can be used to say “You’re doing it wrong” or to simply state the opposite of the accepted meme. Or if the other person is stupid/gullible enough, Reverse Memes can even be used as a trolling technique, similar to corruptions and misidentifications of memes.

Reversals as Memes

Some reversed memes can take on life of their own (or have).

Memes based around macro templates, such as Advice Animals, are prime candidates for this. In their case, any particular advice animal may be such a specific stereotype that it is easy to create a reverse. Opposite pairs such as Scumbag Steve and Good Guy Greg are typical of reversed advice animals.

Memes should be a contagious idea (ie I come up with an idea, idea passes to another person, idea passes to another person, idea passes to another person…).

The problem with this one is that, like Chris Menning said, doing the reverse of something is pretty natural. There was even some joking around about X did NOT eat/ate my balls way back in the 90s. I think it would be hard to claim that people were inspired to make “reverse memes” because of they saw these first “reverse memes.”

Tis like this… robots aren’t an internet meme. I wouldn’t talk about robots because I saw someone else talk about robots on the internet. I would talk about robots because I want to talk about robots.

So I would think people create reverse memes because thats a natural way to make fun of things, not necessarily because they saw someone else do it.

tl;dr This gallery is lulzy, and we should keep it… but meh for the entry itself.
