About
Smash Bros, Lawl is a series of Youtube videos made by the creator of The Frollo Show: chincherrinas. The series is notable for mixing numerous internet memes and cults into a Smash Bros styled fighting game.
History
In December 18th of 2009, Youtube user chincherrinas uploaded a Smash Bros Brawl video in the same vein as several character moveset showcases that were uploaded on Youtube aroung SSBB's release, except that the video featured the Youtube Poop character I M Meen from the homonymous game overlapped in place of a certain character showcasing his special moves. To the uploader's surprise, the video became widely popular despite the quality of the animation and quickly earned views. Up to this day, the video has got over 116.000 views.
In February 26th of 2010, chincherrinas uploaded the sequel, this time featuring King Harkinian (a.k.a. The King) from the CD-i Zelda games (shown left). After the moveset showcase, a teaser fight for a Subspace Emissary series of videos was seen on the video. This short teaser would become its own series of videos, known by the fans as "The SSEries" (shown right).
Chincherrinas kept uploading Smash Bros Lawl videos, by the point were it would be his most popular work at the time. One point of criticism towards the franchise was the fact that Lawl merely used SSBB stages for his videos, until August 2nd of 2011, were he uploaded the first ever stages video in the franchise. Shortly after, he released an Assist Trophies video, however, it was shut down from Youtube due to unknown reasons, and it's nowadays only available in Smash Bros Lawl's Facebook Page.
Near the beginning of the year 2012, Smash Bros Lawl would be overshadowed by another one of chincherrinas' works: The Frollo Show, so the franchise was left behind a couple of months. In March 9th of the same year, chincherrinas announced in one of his videos that he was gonna mark all of his past SSBL videos as part of the "Classic Era" which featured exactly 12 characters and that he was gonna reboot the series into a more unique and serious project, maintaining the original 12 and their respective stages though. In the very same video, it was announced that the sentence-mixed version of Pat Cashman (Brawl's narrator) he was using wasn't gonna be used anymore and would be replaced by a sentence mixed version of Morgan Freeman.
This led many of the fans to rage over chincherrinas and attempted to force him to bring back the old narrator to the game. In his next video, he stated that the game was gonna allow several narrators available and that Morgan Freeman was just one of them. Despite all this, Pat Cashman hasn't been featured in a single video of the modern version of Smash Bros Lawl, and it's unknown if he's gonna return at all.
This would all lead to the beginning of the so called: "Post-Morgan era". The "controversial" video is shown below:
After uploading some character movesets, in April 10th of 2012 chincherrinas uploaded a moveset video on Yomika, a character from a Yume Nikki Fangame. The video's description said:
"That's it. I've finally reached The Point. Yomika's pretty much the reason why I let this thing live. I thought it would be wise to "pave the road" by first introducing the other 3 characters, who are also very epic characters by themselves and also fueled me into continuing this, but not as much as good ol' Yomi. Now I'll get back to working on what's really good."
With "what's really good" actually referring to the fact that he was gonna spend more time on his most beloved franchise: The Frollo Show, meaning that SSBL would suffer from a significant drop of duration and quality on his following movesets, which led most fans disappointed.
In July 17th, 2012, the series was completely revamped, leading to the "Post-Frollo Summer Era" referencing the huge amount of Frollo Show videos uploaded during the previous period. The video featured Scanty & Kneesocks from Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt as the characters featured in that video. Among these changes, the most obvious being the new animated idles and stage revamping. The video is shown below:
A good bunch of moveset videos were uploaded during that era, all of them being universally acclaimed among fans. However, in September 27th of 2012, chincherrinas uploaded a moveset on Haruhi Suzumiya, the ending to this video hinted that the series was gonna end because "he ran out of space in the menu". This however, was merely a joke, considering he uploaded a couple more movesets shortly after, being both Zoolander and Hercules in New York (Arnold Schwarznegger). This marking the end of the Post- Frollo Summer Era.
In January 23th of 2013, chincherrinas uploaded a new Subspace Emissary video, after suffering from a hiatus of nearly a whole year. However, the level was much shorter than all the previous ones because chincherrinas decided to focus more on the story than on the actual gameplay. This, however backfired a lot, because several of his fans felt cheated and criticized the video for the "disappointingly short" duration of the levels. This marked the "Subspace Era" (Despite the fact that only 2 of the 4 videos uploaded in this era were Subspace Emissary related).
The level is shown below:
In February 25th of the same year, chincherrinas uploaded a moveset video on the cult ghosthunter: "Carlos Trejo", while the moveset was well received at the beginning, the channel suddenly stopped all activity in march of the same year and would stay with a hiatus of nearly 7 months. Fans, as a form of protest, starting disliking the video which led to a major number of dislike votes, nowadays, it has a total of 137 likes and a total of 125 dislikes, marking the record on the Smash Bros Lawl moveset with the biggest amount of dislike votes.
The ideo is shown below:
This, unofficially marked the end of the Subspace Era.
In September 9th of 2013, chincherrinas uploaded a video on Weird Al Yancovic, marking the beginning of the "Finale Era"
"Finale" because he considered ending the series in favor of the Frollo Show. Much to his surprise, in 21th of the month chincherrinas was sent a video of a convention where Doug Walker (aka the Nostalgia Critic, which recieved his moveset a few years earlier) was present in a convention and a fan of The Frollo Show told him about the series' existance, which led to chincherrinas into makingeven bigger effort in his projects, eventually leading to the return of the Lawl series. Later on February, 2nd of 2014, he posted a moveset on J. Jonah Jameson. Despite being obvious he wasn't ending the series at all, he is still listed at the Finale Era.
Nearly a year after, in February 16th of 2015, chincherrinas uploaded a moveset on the character Mary from the indie-horror game Ib. This makred the beginning of the current era: Revamp Epoch. It's notable for giving each character unique sprites, rather than cropped clips of several movies and shows. This marked the official distancement from Brawl with the game now being more reminiscent of Smash 4. Video is shown below:
