The King of Fighters (also abbreviated KOF) is a series of fighting video games created by SNK, in which characters from various SNK franchises fight in teams of 3 to defeat their opponents and win the KOF tournament.

Gameplay

While gameplay varies throughout the series, in all games the player selects three characters to play from a large character roster and uses a powerbar to execute a variety of attacks, combos and special moves in order to damage their opponents.

History

The name "King of Fighters" was first introduced in the 1991 _SNK fighting game Fatal Fury: King of Fighters.

On August 25th, 1994, the first King of Fighters game was released by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade system. Many sequels were released over the next several years.

On October 26th, 2005, SNK Playmore released *_The King of Fighters XI_ for the Atomiswave, followed by a PlatStation 2 release the next year. On April 10th, 2009, SNK Playmore launched The King of Fighters XII in arcades, followed by a release for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in July.

On July 14th, 2010, SNK Playmore released The King od Fighters XIII in arcades, with console ports the following year. In 2011 and 2012, mobile versions for Android and iOS were released, followed by a PC version on Steam in September 2013.
In August 2016, The King of Fighters XIV was released for the PlayStation 4, followed by a PC release on Steam in June 2017.

On February 22nd, 2008, the fan made King of Fighters Wiki^[7] was created. On September 6th, 2009, the /r/KoF^[5] subreddit was launched for discussions about the franchise. In March 2016, a fan page for King of Fighters was created on Facebook.^[3]
