Yandere Girls Who Love You to Death So You Can't Sleep (Japanese : ヤンデレの女の子に死ぬほど愛されて眠れないCD, Yandere No Onnanoko Ni Shinuhodo Aisarete Nemurenai CD), usually called Yandere CD (ヤンデレCD), is a series of audio drama CD named "You can't sleep" and produced by the Japanese indies record label EDGE RECORDS.^[1]

Since 2008, the Yandere sister Nagisa Nonohara and other yandere girls appearing in this series has been set the subject of parody on the Japanese video sharing service Nico Nico Douga because of their epicness and ridiculousness.

Origin

Introduction : Yandere

The word "yandere", a term that blossomed in moe fandom, refers to a character who is crazy about someone else. Literally. Despite the anime-inspired name, this type of character is much, much older than that, as one of the earliest examples is Medea of Greek Myth.

The character almost always appears perfectly cute and harmless on the surface… but underneath they may be obsessive, controlling, and sometimes just plain insane. Woe to anyone who happens to be the object of their often genuine affection. Even more pity should be saved for anyone who gets in the way – the psycho-obsessive is amazingly unwilling to put up with any rivals (but the rivals had it coming). There could be a long mental instability, else the girls have always been just a little off. Could be the product of Break the Cutie. Often eventually goes off the deep end and becomes an Ax Crazy Girl with Psycho Weapon, and that's just fun!

In spite of its quite ridiculous rendering, yandere has been one of the standard character types in Japanese Anime/Manga/Game since middle of 2000s. And, many products that set yandere itself to its main theme like this CD series have also been released because of its popularity.

Nagisa Nonohara

CD for this series has been released three times and 12 "yandere" girls are starring in totall. Among them, the most popular Yandere girl is Nagisa Nonohara appearing in the first CD. She loving her brother absolutely is called "The Yandere Sister" (ヤンデレ妹, Yandere Imouto).

In addition, in those days, her voice actor Yurika Ochiai^[3] was famous for her illness speech and behavior on Japanese web. So, Nagisa's "yandere" was felt much more realistic than that of other girls by listeners, and her visual and remarks became some sort of the symbol of this series.

Spread

Soon after the initial sales of the first CD was launched in Comiket73 in December 2007, not a few Japanese Otaku had drawn a great deal of attention to this and rushed to make reservations for its official launch. This enthusiasm of Otaku was reported on an online news site.^[4]

On the other hand, its audio tracks were immediately reproduced to Nico Nico Douga by rude people. Then, it was set to the subject of online parody such as dialogue parodies that made her talk with other characters incoherently^[5] and MADs.^[6]

As of September 2011, the number of videos related to this CD series on NND is over 2200, and about 1900 videos among them are dialogue parodies^[7] and other 300 videos are MADs.^[8] They also are uploaded to YouTube.

Pixiv, a Japanese social network service for illustrators, also jumped in this fad wagon. Over 300 fan arts and parody art works are posted to there.^[9]
