A Simpsons Reference
“You, sir, are an idiot” is a memorable quote from Krusty the Klown, of The Simpsons cartoon, from Season 15, episode 9 entitled “The Last Temptation of the Krust” originally airing February 22nd, 1998.
‘You sir’ is a common prefix that can be added to the beginning of a declarative statement. It is generally used to add emphasis to an opinion, generally to imply a tone of respect. By all implications of the words, one is ironically saying “I respectfully disrespect you.”
A Typo Within a Simpson’s Reference
By simply adding the letter d, a variant of the phrase, “You sir are and idiot” has been popularized on 4chan. The addition of a typo adds a second layer of irony, in this form now implying “I believe that I know more than you, despite my own ineptitude.”

Forced Meme Status
Because the supposed meme consists of little more than a basic Simpons reference, lacking much in terms of original content or recontextualization, calling it an Internet Meme is less than accurate.
For over a year, Dramatica has accurately referred to “You sir are an idiot” as a Forced Meme.
Google Insights
Significant search trends for both variations of the phrase began showing up in August and September of 2008. It is not entirely clear what would cause the phrase to regain popularity 10 years after debuting in popular culture.
