I thought it was common knowledge that he didn't literally say "anime was a mistake", but that he does still have a lot of disdain for the current anime industry and otaku in general.
He's extremely opinionated and stubborn, which is I suppose kind of a breath of fresh air for a famous personality considering most we see are either kind of emotionally shallow or just to themselves about their feelings.
