The DOS version could run on an 80486 DX2 33MHz, 8MB of RAM (1 of which was required) without mathematical co-processor.

These were the stated requirements and I happened to own one such power horse (in 2003. Actively used to do homework), and I can say it does run, but you will actually need to choose "low quality" and reduce the window size significantly, making it slightly better than SNES Doom.

Said machine had Excel 95 but I didn't knew neither the code to make the Hall of Tortured Souls to run on it, nor had the Windows version of Doom (which allegedly was optimized for Win95 and in fact was a selling point for the system).

TL;DR what kind of potato you had that couldn't run DOOM.
