Given that the governmental system in Equestria has always been Monarchal or Diarchal, the introduction of a new Princess without the apparent existence of any real NEED for one presents something of a serious future point of conflict for the nation's political atmosphere.
I would suspect that if this were real life, the townsponies would indeed be rather emotional about the topic. It's not every day that one of your number suddenly ascends to near-godhood, after all.
All joking aside, I do hope that they spend at least a little bit of time in S4 acknowledging how strange Twilight's Princesshood will be for the rest of the populous. They've told us that "nothing significant will change" in regards to Twilight's interactions with her friends and the town of Ponyville, yet realistically being a Princess should MEAN something going forward. If they're going to do this, to make Twilight a Princess and an Alicorn, it should be more than simply a cosmetic upgrade.

The concept of a small town having a local librarian/Princess/God and being totally nonplussed about it just seems beyond ridiculous to me.
