I never seem to hear "otaku" being used a whole lot these days. Nowadays people seem to have started replacing "otaku" with "weeaboo" as the new "person who likes Japanese things, like anime" descriptor (and to be fair, both have similar origins; otaku, in Japan at least, was basically the same thing as calling someone a "neeeeerd!" in the 80s, and "weeaboo" started off as a way to describe annoying people who acted like Japanese culture was superior to all others, though now it doesn't seem like it's used all that often to describe those kinds of people; basically it's "taking something once used negatively and instead turn it into a neutral or positive phrase," kinda like how lately the only people I ever hear using "faggot" in a derogatory manner are actual bigots like Westboro Baptist members, but among the "general" internet population it's basically just a typical insult without much meaning behind it).
