Oh, hell yeah, there's a huge difference. Back then, even the usually nice characters could be brutal sometimes.

Though, to be honest, normal villagers were quite passive-aggressive themselves a lot of the time.
Villager: I forget where I buried things all the time! Do you ever do that?
Player: Not really…
Villager: Oh, well, I guess you're just so perfect then! And I bet you also think I'm just an airhead, right?! I don't even know why I bothered asking your opinion!
There was a reason the normal personality type was my least favorite in GC.
