These settings are extreme aftermaths of wars and other great tragedies and the resulting society is intense. This isn't the only kind of dystopia, though. Just because we aren't in a tragic situation seen in the books and movies doesn't mean we don't live in a somewhat dystopian place; ours is just much more boring.
