About

"Modern Society" Parodies are variations on an exploitable comic that shows many people standing in one line for an item, and one person standing in the other. In the variations, what the people are standing in line for is altered, and the product for which one person is standing line is considered superior.

Origin

The earliest dated appearance of the comic online was in a slideshow on SlideShare posted July 2nd, 2012.[1] In this version of the comic, the two lines represent "Those who don't have time" and "Those who have time" (shown below).

If Time was Money most would be Broke THOSE WHO HAVE TIME: THOSE WHO DON'T HAVE TIME STAND IN LINE HERE STAND IN LINE HERE 「 COUNTER 1 COUNTER 2

Spread

The comic saw little spread in the following few years. However, between 2012 and early 2017, the comic was altered such that the two lines were for "rock, metal" and "Pop, Rap, Dupstap" (sic) (shown below). This alteration was shared in mockery of both the comic's misspelling of dubstep and its opinion of music. On February 27th, the comic was uploaded to Reddit's /r/lewronggeneration[2] with the title "Dern Kids and Their Dupstaps," gaining over 1,400 points.

In the following months, the image would be exploited by other fandoms, particularly those for video games and anime. On May 14th, a version which made the lines for "Normie Memes" and "Dank Memes" was posted to /r/MemeEconomy,[3] where it gained 234 points.

Oh, look, yet another "thing I don't like that everyone else does so let me express it in a pretentious way" meme. This is the third one of this type documented in under 30 days: "will we find intelligent life?" was 26 days, and "all life is precious" was 20 days ago. How do people looking at this stuff not go,"hasn't this punchline been used in a similar joke before?"
