A bizarre creepypasta is going viral on sites like TikTok and YouTube right now and it's all about the Nickelodeon cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants. The story, known as 7/25/2005, claims that on July 5th, 2005, Nickelodeon aired a glitched episode of the show that left some viewers scarred for life. But is it real? Here's what you need to know.

What Is The "7/25/2005" Creepypasta?

In July 2020, YouTuber niceANDcool posted a video titled "7/25/2005." The video shows glitching footage of the SpongeBob SquarePants episode "Your Shoe’s Untied/Gary Takes a Bath."

In the video, SpongeBob is seen face-down, unmoving on the ground as Patrick tries to get his attention. SpongeBob teleports from the front of the Krusty Krab to the kitchen in the same position, then there's a cut to a scene where SpongeBob and Gary sit in a giant shoe. The footage is unnerving and caught the attention of the internet, gaining over 228,000 views in three years.

In May 2021, the video inspired a Lost Episode Creepypasta Fandom member, SpongebobSummerSplash, to write a story where the narrator claims to have witnessed the event. The story was shared as a creepypasta over the next few years, also inspiring a lot of videos on YouTube claiming to either be the real footage of the glitch, or recreations of it.

Is "7/25/2005" A True Story?

While the story has spread far across social media, there is no evidence to suggest that it's true. There are no reports or discussions of the glitch from before 2020 and all the videos purportedly showing it seem to be stylistic edits. As it stands, the 7/25/2005 SpongeBob glitch is most likely not something that really happened, despite being fairly believable as far as creepypastas go.
