Why Jordan Peele's 'Nope' Is Blowing Up Online

Nope is the latest Jordan Peele movie that's making headlines and sparking debates everywhere. In essence, Nope follows two ranchers as they discover a mysterious phenomenon going on in the area that's been taking their horses and appears to have been responsible for their dad's death. Things escalate pretty quickly after they figure out what's going on, and while everyone seems to have a very different opinion on this film, in my opinion it was absolutely incredible. But there's certainly a lot to talk about here, and it's understandable how it's blown up on social media already.

If you remember the hype that surrounded Get Out, you know the influence Jordan Peele's movies have had. Get Out was widely loved, except by those who either didn't care for the messages on racism in the film (which is kind of the point) or those who weren't fans of the absurdism. Jordan Peele movies tend to rely on this aspect quite a bit, and he does it incredibly well. After all, if any other director put out a horror movie about people's brains being stolen via hypnotism and Frankenstein-style brain surgery, it would not have performed as spectacularly as Get Out did.

So by now, you probably know just how weird Peele's movies can be, but apparently, they get weirder, as we've seen in Nope. Most people were expecting it to be much more psychological and political, but instead, this movie was a great new take on alien invasions with a super weird twist. Its film style and absurdity was similar to Get Out, but this one was just so over the top that you can't even really compare the two. And online, people are debating whether or not the many bizarre aspects of this movie worked. Most people tend to say this movie was amazing, but some pretty notable people very strongly disagree.

Logan Paul is one of the most famous people to have expressed his hatred of this movie, referring to it as "one of the worst movies he's seen in a long time." But people generally found this ironic, since a central theme of the movie is people suffering the consequences of doing ridiculous things for attention. And if you happen to remember…well, anything he's been famous for (a particular video in the forest comes to mind) you'd understand why people found his opinion on this movie so funny. Many people hoped they would love this movie just so they could have a differing opinion from Logan Paul, who apparently was deeply offended by the message.

Aside from the debate of who loved and hated Nope, there are lots of scenes and thematic elements that are already earning some fame. One of the most talked about moments of the movie is the perfectly choreographed handshake between Keke Palmer and Daniel Kaluuya's characters. There's also a lot of discourse surrounding Gordy the killer chimpanzee, especially in theorizing his meaning in the context of the film. And there's also quite a few jokes about the scene where Steven Yeun's character elaborately describes an old SNL skit. There's already so much people are talking about from this movie, and it's clearly going to become popular in memes too. It's difficult to live up to the influence of Get Out, but it's likely we'll be hearing a lot about Nope in the near future too, and hopefully it'll get the credit it deserves.
