Memes of the Week: September 6th, 2019
I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to recap the memes of the week.
This week, the internet was gripped by a historical eating machine, Minecraft bees, shopping cart wheels, and Jeremy Renner's bizarre app.
Tarrare
Wheeeeeen yooooou
eat babies’ eyes
like a big-a pizza pie
youuuu’re Tarrareeeeeeee
Earlier this week, Tumblr rediscovered the legend of Tarrare, an 18th-century Frenchman whose appetite was so voracious he would eat anything in sight, including garbage, wine corks, and, allegedly, a baby. The man became the source of dozens of object labeling memes on the unique social media platform, but for the real scoop, check out Sam O'Nella's video about the legend.
Minecraft Bees
Somehow, bees in Minecraft became a controversial topic this week. A recent patch added them to the game, and soon after the Trans community ignited a week-long argument over whether or not the bee was transgender. Naturally, there's no evidence to support that idea, but the simple phrase "The Minecraft Bee Is Trans" led to such impassioned responses that the trolling continued unabated.
Shopping Cart Wheels
The most mundane and highly-specific template of the week came in the form of "Shopping Cart Wheels," which builds off the observation that one shopping cart wheel always seems to move independent from the other three. From this small and silly issue of day to day life grew dozens of creative images showing three identical characters and one character absolutely going ham. This goofy yet wholesome series is the latest in a long line of templates that prove Reddit can meme absolutely anything.
Jeremy Renner App
Like a cinnamon roll, Jeremy Renner's app was too pure, too perfect for this world. The app was simply a way for fans of the Hawkeye actor to show photos of himself and offer trite well wishes to his fans, but it became a national phenomenon when Twitter users raided it with pornography and bizarre messages. Sadly, the app is no more as the trolling led to the shutdown of the whole shebang, but it will live on in our hearts while we wait for Renner to expand his brand into the next unexpected territory.
I have been kicked off the Renner app for running a deep fake Richard Kind account repeatedly trying to ask Jeremy Renner for advice on how to get into the music business. pic.twitter.com/MdjmY1GNfA
