Somewhere, a man in the sky is Woo-ing in celebration.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice took home Game of the Year at last night's Game Awards, edging out a strong field of nominees that included Death Stranding, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Control, Resident Evil 2, and The Outer Worlds. Sekiro also took home the award for Best Action-Adventure game.

"Sekiro had a lot of difficult elements which made us a little unsure when it came out," said director Hitedaka Miyazaki. "We were both surprised and overjoyed at the reaction we saw."

The award was seen as an upset by some, but fans nevertheless were thrilled at the pick, particularly after the game generated discussion about it possibly being too difficult.

The award capped off a trailer-filled night that included looks at the new Xbox, Hellblade II, Ghost of Tsushima, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and many more. Surprisingly, the night did not include an announcement of the next Smash DLC character, as many fans had anticipated.

Other major awards include Disco Elysium winning Best Narrative and Best RPG, Smash Ultimate winning Best Fighting Game, Fire Emblem: Three Houses winning Best Strategy Game, and Death Stranding winning Best Game Direction.
