It's not every week that a prevalent theme appears which dominates the entire weekend in the memescape. When this rare event does occur, however, it is usually around a powerful force that results in spin-offs, such as Cyberpunk 2077. This previous weekend, grandparents became the main theme with three separate instances involving the elderly circulating across the web. These memes included Joe Biden Tripping on Boarding Stairs, Prince Philip at 99 and Granddad Frank.

Joe Biden Tripping on Boarding Stairs

Joe Biden Tripping on Boarding Stairs is a meme we all knew was coming as soon as the event happened. While walking up the stairs to Air Force One, Joe Biden fell not once, not twice, but three times, in quick succession. This moment was tweeted out as a short video, which made it incredibly easy for online content creators to edit different things into it. The primary examples of memes revolving around this involve people editing things into the video to explain why Biden fell over, while other examples are made to just poke fun at the situation itself. Despite this meme being made at his expense, it does mark the second week in a row that Biden has impacted online memes.

Prince Philip at 99

Prince Philip at 99 is a series of memes that contrasts Prince Philip, who recently celebrated turning 99, with various other images of differing age ranges. This is another continuation into the memes about Prince Philip looking rather unflattering for his livelihood. The memes about Prince Philip are usually done by comparing him to various characters in video games or movies that are undead, zombies, or otherwise extremely old and decrepit. These newer memes about his age, however, take it in the opposite direction, making them a fresh departure from the norm.

Granddad Frank

Granddad Frank refers to the legendary TikTok dance icon Frank. While it is usually seen as taboo for older generations to get onto newer forms of social media, TikTok has managed to pave the way for many old people to not have a How Do You Do Fellow Kids moment. These are people who genuinely are getting into the space and adding to it correctly, which leads to a lot of viral moments. Granddad Frank is not the only recent viral grandparent on TikTok either, for over the weekend there was another viral grandparent, though her video was more focused on advanced editing techniques than dance moves. This definitely feels like a portent of a more internet connected inter-generational meme alliance, and that has great implications for the future.
