About

Origin
On March 16, media reported that Prince Philip of the British royal family left King Edward VII's hospital after succesfully recovering from a heart surgery.[1][2] Several photographs of Prince Philip being driven away from the hospital were published by media).
On March 16th, 2021, Twitter[3] user @rarevhs posted the earliest meme that compared a photograph of Prince Philip against a photograph of a younger-looking individual aged above 100. The tweet made a joke about rapper Felony Steve who "was never born" and gained 15 retweets and 150 likes (shown below, left
). Within one hour, Twitter[4] user @darklingsaint made a similar tweet comparing Bone and Shadow character The Darkling against Prince Philip. The tweet gained over 300 retweets and 2,300 likes in six days (shown below, right).
Spread
The format did not achieve viral spread until March 17th, 2020, when Twitter[5] user @C2testa made a viral tweet comparing Prince Philip against rapper Chief Keef that gained over 18,800 retweets and 103,700 likes in five days (shown below). The tweet references a 2013 interview[6] in which Cheef Keef claims to be 300 years old.
Following the viral spread of the tweet, the format gained popularity on Twitter, with users often intentionally misinterpreting numbers associated with the people and characters for humorous effect. For example, on March 19th, Twitter user @MonyqueXO posted a meme about rapper André 3000 that gained over 24,800 retweets and 161,300 likes in three days (shown below, left). On March 20th, Twitter user @mapache_exe posted a meme about the TV show Zoey 101 that gained over 45,200 retweets and 418,300 likes in two days (shown below, right).
