Marvel and Milo Manara

For those of you who haven't heard, a while back Marvel released the covers for Spider Woman. However one of the variant covers caught the attention of many angry females. The cover in question is pictured below.

I will provide a link and a video to the two different sides.

Ten stupid arguments over the Spider Woman cover

Now recently Marvel has cancelled two commissions of Milo Manara variants.

"Tuesday comic book retailers were informed by Diamond Comics Distributors that two upcoming variant covers for October’s Avengers & X-Men: Axis #1 and November’s Thor #2, solicited to be drawn by Milo Manara, will no longer be illustrated by the veteran Italian artist. Other artists will instead draw the variants. Siya Oum will draw the Axis #1 variant, and the new artist for the Thor #2 variant has yet to be named."

So I will voice my opinion.

Firstly the cover itself. I am a bit of a Manara fan but I just didn't like it personally, it's probably my least favourite of his Marvel variants. I don't really like Spider Woman either because she is boring. Do I think it's sexy or she is presenting herself? Not really. The series isn't sold to me regardless of the cover.

Now many people will bring up the fact that it was a bad choice of cover because the series is aimed towards women (by the way the artist that draws it, Greg Land, is know for copying stuff out of pornos and putting costumes on them). They say that the cover puts many female readers off. However I want to point out it's a variant cover again and a supposedly rare one, too. But more importantly I think that females that literally judge a book by its (alternate) cover, don't deserve to read it, if it is good. People are blaming the fact that it is commissioned for a female friendly book with the assumption only females are going to read it (this probably going to be true) but the fact that now hetero men, bi, lesbian and even some straight women can't have these (alternate) covers because it puts other women off is stupid.

However the Axis and Thor #2 are things I was really interested in seeing Milo do. I am really irritated Marvel chose to stop his commissions because of this book that's only interest came from a "racy" cover.

Funnily enough I would have bought a Thora the Explorer Thor #2 because I really like Manara's stuff and would want to see what he would have done with the design, because to me it would be worth the story without the far superior Odinson.
