Hello, everyone, and welcome to the first annual April Fools’ Mafia! The two or so of you who I told about this back in November have been waiting for this eagerly, and now it’s finally here!

Unlike other mafia games, this game will be what mafia enthusiasts would call “bastard mod” and everyone else would call “complete horseshit.” In the spirit of April Fools’ Day, this game will include deliberately overpowered and/or stupid roles, nonsensical mechanics, and sometimes even outright lies. On the whole, this mafia is more of a joke than a balanced game, so don’t expect skill or strategy to get you very far.

~~

General Rules, partially stolen from Crimea's general mafia rules:
1. If any player does not submit their PM to me during the night phase then their action is forfeit for that phase, so make sure to get those PMs in!

2. If a player does not vote during the day phase then their vote is not counted. Only players who voted will be tallied (i.e. if a player has 3 votes against them and 4 players did not vote then that player is still killed).

3. If you take no action for 3 days you will be removed from the game. For special roles you will be replaced by a random existing villager. All players must vote in the day phase to remain in the game (i.e. the PMs sent in by special roles will not keep you in the game). If your role restricts what you can post in the thread, you may still vote my PMing me during the day phase.

4. When you are killed your role will be revealed. You will be allowed to send me a single PM containing anything you wish to say (no character limit). I will then redact certain parts of your PM before posting it in the thread if I feel it will reveal too much, so you can go all out in your PM. You may still observe the game (obviously, I can’t stop you from reading) but please refrain from posting anything beyond jokes. Be sure to keep an eye on the thread, as resurrection of dead players isn't entirely impossible.

5. You may discuss the contents of private conversations with other players in the thread, including direct quotes, as well as the contents of your role PM. The only thing banned is screenshots of PMs. Keep in mind, however, that these quotes can easily be falsified by other players.

6. When voting in this thread or sending in your PM please bold the name of the player(s) you are targeting/voting for (place a * on both sides of a word to bold it). If you are changing your vote from one player to another please only bold the player you are currently voting for (i.e. don’t say “I’m changing my vote from player 1 to player 2”, say “I’m changing my vote from player 1 to player 2”).

7. Please do not sign up for this game unless you are willing to commit. It’s not fun for anyone when 5 players drop out right off the bat because they didn’t get the role they wanted and furthermore it’s a big disadvantage for the remaining citizens. Being a vanilla can be lots of fun if you participate in discussions and actively try to figure things out.

8. If the cult outnumbers the town and mafia combined, cult votes will no longer count towards the vote total, to give the town and mafia more time to find and assassinate the cult leader. Cultists can still place votes in the thread, but these will have no effect on the hidden tally.

9. Votes may be effected by Random Vote Bullshit™, a random chance of the vote tally becoming screwy. Sometimes all votes will count, sometimes town or mafia votes won't, and sometimes only one random vote will be counted.

~~

Possible Roles
Keep in mind that these are not all the roles that will appear, and not even these are guaranteed to make it into the game.

- Vanilla: A normal town or cult member. They can participate in votes, but they have no other abilites. The Mafia may also have vanillas within its ranks if I get a particularly high player turnout, but this is unlikely.

- Doctor: A town role. Each night phase, the doctor may protect another player to stop all actions targeting them.

- Cop: A town role. Each night phase, the cop may target a player to learn their allegiance.

- Beloved Princess: A town role. When the Princess is killed, the next day phase is skipped.

- Don: A mafia role. The don leads the mafia, and has the ability to kill every night. In addition, the don will appear as a vanilla townie when investigated.

- Seer: A role given to both the town and mafia. Each seer receives completely accurate information about the game (such as how roles work or who has what role) once per night phase.

- Cult Leader: The Cult Leader is the commander of the Cult, a small group of fanatics dedicated to the destruction or assimilation of all townies and maifans. The cult leader starts out alone, and alternates between converting and killing enemies. If the cult leader is killed, the cultists return to their original factions as vanillas.

- Deprogrammer: A role given to both the town and mafia. If the deprogrammer targets a cultist, he converts them to the deprogrammer's faction.

Ideally, signups will close and the game will begin on April 1, but depending on how many signups I get, I may have to extend the deadline into the weekend. At the very latest, signups will close on Sunday, April 3 at midnight, and Night 0 will be posted on Monday, April 4 after I've sent out all role PMs. If you have any questions about the game or how roles work, feel free to PM me or post in the thread about it. The MafiaScum Wiki also has useful information about mafia in general, or how some of the less out-there roles work. The player cap will be 30 players, although the ultimate number will almost certainly be less.

Good luck, and have fun! (Or not. It's all the same to me.)

This has gotten a surprising amount of turnout already. I was considering going ahead and starting the game tomorrow, but it occurred to me that beginning a forum game in the midst of the inevitable April Fools' event might not be the best idea. So i'll be going with my original plan and keeping signups open until Sunday, April 3 at midnight. On April 4, I'll begin sending out role PMs to all players, and Night 0 will begin at 9 PM on the same day.

Don't forget that some people may have a different GMT compared to your own.

Oh, right. Sorry! I live in American Central Time, UTC-6.

(Though neither of those deadlines are hard and fast – I just don't want people signing up while I'm in the middle of assigning roles on Monday. If someone signs up at 1 AM it won't be a huge problem.)

Alright, I'm assigning the roles now, and no more signups will be accepted. You'll all receive your roles by 9 PM, when Night 0 will be posted.

Also, Xin signed up by PM at the last minute, bringing the player total to 21.

Everyone should have your role PMs now. If you haven't gotten anything yet, please PM me about it (even if you're a vanilla, you still should have gotten a PM). Night 0 will be posted tonight.

Night 0

It was a quiet night in Riffraffburg. Flowers were blooming, owls were signing, and late night shitposters were making fools of themselves. Times were peaceful, at least by this town's standards. No one could predict the spiral of madness that would ensue from tonight's events.

~~~~
This night is basically a practice night to allow investigative roles to get a leg up and let new players get used to night actions. All players with night actions, except for those who only have killing or cult conversion actions, may make their first moves. (If you have the ability to kill alongside other abilities, you may take any action except killing.) Seers will also receive their first visions tonight.
The night phase will either last two days (until this time on the sixth) or until all night actions are received.
And with that, good luck and happy Mafia-ing!
While in previous games we had a fair share of dedicated detectives, as well as lurkers, I still think it isn't entirely useless to have a few investigators, at least to try and get things started.
Otherwise, we have nothing to work with, until after a few nights pass and the players with roles give us important information.
There isn't really much to start at this point in the game other than pure speculation.
Of course. But traditionally we had a few roleplaying characters. But like I said, we just wait for now.
If you've ever played Town of Salem, I'm the guy with the doctor scrubs who lives in the gingerbread house. Don't eat the house.
I'm a Hippie SWAT officer who lives in a Hippie Van who is detested by townie scrubs, mostly cuz i RP a Irish investigator.
I'm making a small change to how some roles work. At the end of the night phase, players will learn:
- Whether they were investigated, protected, or roleblocked, but not which player/role did it
- Whether their protection target was targeted (for doctors)
Also, the Don's abilities are inherited by a lesser mafian if they are killed, to prevent the Mafia from losing its ability to kill townies. This was always an ability of the Don, but I forgot to add it to the OP.
You have 24 hours remaining to send in or change night actions. (And by "you," I mean the one guy who hasn't sent his in yet. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE)
Day 1
The unsuspecting townspeople awoke to find that one of their own… had been murdered! Snickerway's corpse was found in the town square, having been brutally memed on.
You are the GM, a neutral player. You make up stupid roles, PM a bunch of people, and shitpost in the thread a lot. You win when no one has any idea what's going on.
The innocent townies were horrified to discover that such a cool dude had been rekt. How could anyone kill such an attractive guy? The townspeople were desperate to find the culprit.
~~~~

Thus begins the first day phase. For those of you who haven't done this before, during the day phase, all players discuss the game and vote to lynch a player they believe is mafia. The player with the most votes is killed at the end of the day phase.

You may also vote for "No Lynch." If No Lynch gains the majority of votes, no player will be killed, and the game will move on to the next night phase.

If the vote is tied, the result will be randomly determined from the tied suspects (as well as No Lynch, if applicable).

Also, as a rule of thumb, future day and night phases will last no less than 1 IRL day and no more than 2 IRL days. This gives early voters/actors time to change their vote/action if they need to. Day 1 will end Friday at 9 PM (Central American time) at the latest.
