Half Life 2 is free for a limited time on Steam. It now has workshop support and apparently the Episodes are being Integrated into the main game.
They added brand new dev commentary too – I'm definitely going to have to do a replay soon
Watched the documentary they made in celebration, lot of interesting stuff in those 2 hours. We also got the obvious answer everyone already assumes why we never got Episode 3. They had burned themselves out creatively with how to further innovate HL2 and then became distracted with other projects, chiefly L4D. After that, they felt too much time had passed and scrapped Episode 3 entirely until they could do something really new with it. That something new wouldn't come until a decade later with a new engine and the advent of VR gaming, HL:Alyx.

I am happy we got Half-Life: Alyx, but now they will have problems explaining how G-Man went back in time and stuff.
