Various Religions and Philosophies General

Post anything about any religion(s) or philosophy(s). Information, pictures, talking about weirder or lesser-known beliefs is also encouraged. I'm working on a story that will involve a myriad of religions and philosophies so any information on any belief system is useful. I only ask that posts be kept varied in their content.

I think Taoism is pretty interesting, I've read rumors that the religion/philosophy started to die out (much like Confucianism) during the Cultural Revolution in China.

Taoism basically encourages the person or individual to live healthily and as long as possible, questioning authority and doing what's best for the community is encouraged, as well resisting temptations. It's quite similar to most Eastern religions, only later "canons" started to worship Lao Tzu as a God, the religion or philosophy started out godless. When someone dies according to Taoism, their spirit or soul wanders the Universe for eternity (IIRC), not sure if that could be seen as Heaven or some form of eternal peace, as Taoism focuses more on the current life than the after-life.

Is political philosophy included? If not, too bad, here it comes.
I hold to the libertarian political philosophy of nonagression. Basically, if I can't do it, the government shouldn't be allowed to do it.
An example: Lets assume I have this really good charity. 80% of all funds gathered go to a really good, widely agreed upon cause (for the sake of argument lets say 90%+ agree with the cause). Do I have the right to go to your home, knock on your door, and demand you donate? And if you don't, may I break down the door and lock you up? Most people would say, no, I don't have the right to do that. It logically follows (for the short version) that government shouldn't be allowed to either.
The reason I specified some numbers about my charity is that the government isn't nearly as efficient or awesome. Not 90%+ of people think more U.S. war in the middle east would bring about the best results. I'm pretty sure less than 90% of people think mass incarceration is a great idea. So it fails that standard, and then it's not even efficient! Only 67.4% of gathered funds go to the actual services according to this.

So nihilism=atheism?
If this is wrong please enlighten me.

Athiesm is believing "There is no God."

Nihilism is believing "There is no God. The universe gives zero fucks about humanity. We're all going to die and our civilizations will eventually crumble, so nothing we do really matters."

Nihilists also have much better taste in facial hair.

That's brutal.jpg

Thanks for the explanation

Well like I said before I am an atheist, I am a little liberal but I have some conservative ideals.

It sounds brutal, but it doesn't have to be.

Here's a quote from SCP-1281 that I think might explain what I mean best:
"The galaxy is dark, empty and cold. It spins inevitably toward death. You will die too, one day. Perhaps you will have longer than we have. We hope so. But one day you too must vanish. Until that time, you must light the darkness. You must make the night less empty. We are all small, and the universe is vast. But a universe filled with voices saying "I am here" is far greater than a universe silent. One voice is small, but the difference between zero and one is as great as one and infinity. And when your time is passing, please send this message on, so the next voice can speak against the darkness."

Basically, if there's no real "meaning" to the universe, then what's to stop us from creating our own? And if our choices are inconsequential, then why not decide to make choices that make people happy? If there's no life after death, then why spend the limited time you have being miserable?

No, philosophy is pretentious nonsense. I don’t need that garbage corrupting me…

I agree. Who actually cares about morality? :^)

Wow I actually thought you were serious.

Since some people didn't get the reference.

But if you hate philosophy you hate the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality, and existence itself.

And if you hate everything on a fundamental level, that's a very unique approach to the fundamental nature of all things.

And I would have to call that an interesting philosophy. :^)

Yeah don't forget about Islam with their Objective Morality

Also one of the most important philosophies to me is "With great power, comes great responsibility".

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's theological philosophy is pretty interesting.

It basically holds that as organisms evolve, despite the setbacks, they gradually move towards a state of complexity. Towards an "Omega Point" of mental and spiritual solidarity and eventually becoming one with God.

Christianity has a pretty strong sense of Objective Morality as well.
