Minecraft, because the music has a perfect flow to the game, and adds both tension, inspiration, and harmony to the game. That or Banjo-Kazooie or EarthBound

Damn man this is a tough thread, I just have so many favourites to try and pick from.

However from the bunch Id say that this is probably one of the most epic pieces I've heard in a game. The song, mixed with the Colossus battle was one of the most unforgettable gaming experiences Ive ever had…

Shadow of The Colossus: Separation With Despair

But like I said I have a lot to choose from so Ill put down a little list of some of my other favourites…

Medieval 2: Total War Kingdoms: Americas campaign battle theme

ICO: Castle in The Mist

Metal Gear Solid 2 intro theme

Metal Gear Solid: Encounter

Oddworld: Abe's Oddyse: Stockyards theme

I'm not a big-time gamer, so I'm probably not the best judge. (I can't believe I forgot The Neverhood, that was awesome!) Plants vs. Zombies had some great music for a more recent game, but I always remember fondly some of the old school games of my youth back in the '80s. It was always cool when a game developer managed to create good music on an 8-bit system:

It's difficult to explain how impressive those two themes were for the time in which they were released. (Not to mention how ahead of their time the 3D graphics and gameplay of Elite were; games like that were unheard of.)

Hard to pinpoint just one "best" soundtrack since there are so many good ones out there in my opinion. I hardly like the western soundtracks due to their cinematic nature, so I favour japanese game music with their simple and catchy melodies, especially the old stuff.

Of course games like Fallout and GTA have good soundtracks to them, so not all western game music is just "movie background moodsetter".

I could simply just say that Final Fantasy (insert number here), Chrono Trigger, and other JRPG's in general have the best soundtracks in my opinion, but that'd be a pretty generic answer.

If I had to give extra credit to some soundtracks out there, they'd go to Touhou, and Guilty Gear. But in the case of Touhou, I hold in value the vast multi genre cover songs over the original in game musics.

So I guess my favourite soundtrack would be that of the Guilty Gear series. I can't point out just one song, since every character in the series has got a pretty good theme behind them.

it is a stand off between
Dragon Age – with: Lelianna's song and The Coronation
Guild Wars 2 – with: Fear Not This Night
Rainbow Six – with: the main theme
Assassins Creed 2 – with: Venice Rooftops
World of Warcraft – with: basicly all the songs/music in the game

Here's some other songs I like.

(It plays on the demo video if you wait on the start menu, IT COUNTS)

I'll post more soon.

Just thought I'd help here.

Homeworld. This is one of the most emotional tracks ever, coupled with what happened to Kharak and you've got yourself the best tearjerker in gaming history. I don't know how many people here know about Homeworld, but it's one of my favorite game series. Surpassing that of any other game in terms of story and deliverance in the music and gameplay.

The original song is actually Samuel Barbers Adagio for Strings, only in choral form.

Go about a minute in for best results.

"Everything in this world is a product of someone's mind. This place is yours. This tomb, and the flowers all over it… Your resolve to die is what created this scenery. However… On the way here, we saw things that don't fit a grave. Junes and Souzai Daigaku signs, the bench on the hill, the electric poles, mirrors, school desks…It's all from the town… The home of the people you say you hate so much" -Naoto Shirogane

I always had two long-time favorites:

Meteos had some of the best sound programming in the early days of the DS. The phenomenal thing was that it could all be unlocked for listening on your own.

F-ZERO GX has a huge soundtrack. The individual effort of having completely different tracks for each of the 40 pilot themes and 20 courses was an incredible feat by SEGA and Amusement Vision, not to mention the long list of composers.

The first three Spyro games all had fantastic soundtracks, but I think the first one had my favorite overall soundtrack.

Although, nothing really beats Fireworks Factory in Spyro: Year of the Dragon.

It's a tie for me between these 3:

This was a tough choice for me. I love a lot of video game soundtracks, and if I named all my favorites I would be here all day.

While I wouldn't say I have a favorite video game soundtrack, I do have specific favorites from separate videogames. In particular, the final boss theme from Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story takes the cake as one of my greatest boss battle themes of all time.

Call of Duty 5: World at War. The "Black Cats" mission…

You were the gunner of a Catalina and your mission was to defend a US fleet from the attacking Japanese, it was a fun and different level but was made 10 times more epic when this track kicks in right when the shooting starts….

I got so hyped out, was losing my shit all over the place…

The three final bosses of Sonic 06, Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors. The orchesta themes all my favorites, I hope Lost Worlds have one…

I don't know what is the best… So this guy made a mashup with this three themes:

Skeletor-sm
