Danbo (also known as Cardbo) comes from a chapter of the popular manga "Yotsubato". I have seen many different versions of the character for quite some time now. It seems to be a popular subject of photography.

I think its spread has mostly to due with the fact that it has been recomissioned by Amazon Japan and has become a mascot of sorts for the site.

However, I have one problem when it comes to deciding if this is memetic or not. Is it popular because of spread (I have met several people who love Danbo while not knowing its origin)? Or is it popular because of the original manga and therefore classified as fanart?

I know that I saw a collection of papercrafts of several different characters in Danbo format a long time ago. I'm just trying to find them. I think that [adult swim] did their characters in Danbo format once, but I'm not too sure.

Okay, did some research. And there is a bunch of papercraft in the shape.

However, the term "cubecraft" came before "danbo" and it seems like "danbo" became the name attached to the cubecrafted people.

Any more insight?
