Why don't likes on comment and posts account for Karma given/received?

A question for anyone who is either staff or has knowledge on the subject matter, is there any reason why comment/post likes don't count for Karma received/given – only Forum posts?

Any sort of assistance would be appreciated.

This was answered a while ago but I can't find the original post. But basically, the reason why Karma received on forum posts is tracked but not on comments is because when this website was originally being made, it was thought that the forums would be the main method of communication between users while the comments would just be a side thing.

…obviously, time would prove that the opposite would end up happening.

Correct, end of thread :^)

In all seriousness, there's been a lot of discussion regarding karma on the site. Like 6 years of nested threads worth of it. The underlying reasons for the karma system (including the timer/lockout) aren't admin decisions or to promote a part of the site: it's technical limitation.

Tl;DR tracking a karma scores across each user voting on each post is really bad for the server. There were times when the whole site would slow down because of the overhead required to handle all the up/downdoots across comment chains. This issue isn't present in the forums because nobody uses them.

I see now, thank you for the response.
