Basically, I select it, I upload it, it tells me it's saved, I get out of my profile area, and my avatar isn't changed.

Anyone know why?

You probably saved your new avatar in the same place and with the same name on your harddrive as your old avatar.

Change its name so that it has a 2 or something at the end of it.

As Chris said, this happens when you upload an avatar with the same filename as a previous one.
