Seems to be related to images uploaded to imageshack.

Yeah, I've been noticing the same problem with older threads. Might have something to do with Imageshack whoring themselves out. So should we just delete them since they're glorified ads?

What if it's a select few users altering the images on imageshack in a massive conspiracy to frame imageshack and remove all of its images from KnowYourMeme?

I stopped using Imageshack once I found out there is a paywall on image storage, they're poison. What images are being changed? Ones in comments, forum posts, entries?

Probably old, expired images. I think they're one of those hosts that deletes images that no one has looked at in a while.
