Salvaging the Reaction Faces Gallery

Alrighty people. As we're all well-aware by now, Cringeworthy's gallery has been locked. That was due to a LOT of misuse and abuse. And, as we're also all well-aware of, Reaction Faces is also a very misused gallery.

Let's use recent events as a call to action. It's time to sort out the Reaction Faces gallery as best we can, because the longer we wait the worse it's going to get.

For this to work, we're going to need decent number of dedicated Scrapbookers with a good sense of judgement, as well as cooperation with the Image Moderators. There's two main things to do in Reaction Faces: tag and move.

Using our ability to tag images, Scrapbookers will browse every Reaction Face, one-by-one, and use their own best judgement to tag with the appropriate emotion (or emotions). I suggest using very specific tags in the format "reaction:emotion" (ie "reaction:happy" or "reaction:rage"). While we're at it, make sure to tag source material for anime and manga, games an cartoons, and so on. A LOT of Reaction Faces have zero tags.

The current issue with Reaction Faces is that pretty much every image can be argued to be a "reaction image." However, a majority of them are only usable in very specific situations. As much as I'd love to use, say, this gif as a reaction, it'll be a long while before I'm in a situation where said gif is applicable. That's why Reaction Faces is misused so much; users don't stop and think just how relevant their reaction image can or can't be (myself included).

Along with tagging emotions, Scrapbookers will tag images that don't belong in the gallery with "reaction:NOT." Once the Scrapbookers' work is done, the Image Moderators can sort through the undesirables of Reaction Faces by simply using that tag, and they can choose whether to keep it, move it, or delete it.

Another benefit of using this emotion tag system is that it will stop re-uploads of images in other galleries to Reaction Faces; re-uploading will no longer be justified because the preexisting image can be tagged with a reaction emotion even if it isn't in Reaction Faces.

I'm left here with one problem though, which needs to be discussed. The system of emotion tags needs to be kept throughout, but just what emotions should be used? Going through my old psychology book, a small eight-emotion system I took a liking to is Plutchik's eight of Fear, Joy, Acceptance, Sadness, Anger, Surprise, Disgust, and Anticipation. I suggest using these eight as a base and adding up to four more emotions.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Current tags being used: (lastest edit July 20 @ 10:35 AM) (Also, Jacob has a much larger list on the next page which would destroy my wrists to manually insert all the gallery links, so check it there)

I would advise terms that people would actually type into the search bar. People are going to use more succinct terms than "Acceptance", "Sadness" and "Anticipation"

EG: When I want a sad macro. I don't search for "Sadness" I search for "sad" and when I want an accepting macro I am more likely to type in "okay" rather than "Acceptance"

Furthermore, I'm more likely to use search terms that are relevant to the caption text of the image than the actual emotion. Examples

I'd search for this using OMG/WTF/SHOCK:

I'd search for this using OH SHIT/FUCK/SHIT:

I'd search for this using NOOO/WHY/HORROR:

(Important note on this one: we need to standardize the number of O's. All of our NOOO! reactions are divided between the tags NOOO NOOOO NOOOOO and NOOOOOOO)

This one would be YAY/HOORAY/WOOHOO/JOY

And if an image does have common reaction text then the image should be tagged with that text also

So I suspect our list of tags might look more like this:

  • scared
  • happy
  • sad
  • mad
  • angry
  • yay
  • woot
  • yes
  • no
  • nooo
  • excited
  • pleased
  • nervous
  • tired
  • thanks
  • cheers
  • omg
  • wtf
  • lol
  • why
  • suicide
  • rage

As you can see this is already getting pretty broad so to keep it simple: just aim for the simplest descriptive term of what you are looking at

The thing I don't like about the reaction faces is how a lot of them are not faces at all. Here some examples of what is a reaction face is:
This is a reaction face:
This is a reaction face:
This is a reaction face:

Now what's not a reaction face:
This isn't a reaction face:
This isn't a reaction face:
This isn't a reaction face either:

It's easy to tell which are relevant and irrelevant when it comes to a gallery like this.

You have a point; I should've thought about it on terms of the average Internet user and not a psychologist trying to quantify emotion into basic units. However, I'm rather adamant on the suggestion of making very specific tags that include something like "reaction:asdf," because right now if I type "sad" I get over 2200 results, many of which are images from articles with "sad" in its title. Specifying the tags to be "reaction:no" or "reaction:WTF" would create galleries that contain only reaction images for the reaction a user is looking for. Or we could just do both, adding more tags never hurt anyone.

Despite having some overlapping tags, your list pretty much covers anything I could expect to see in Reaction Faces. So listing some tags, sorted by similarity, here's what we could use:

  • omg, wtf, shock, ohshit, horror, wat
  • scared, nervous, tired, sad
  • yes, yay, joy, excited, pleased, thanks, cheers, lol
  • no, why, anger, rage, suicide

I'd like input from multiple people because the only thing stopping me from doing this right now is an agreed-on tag system.

Shit, is the last time I take a nap before answer my messages.

Many "reactions faces" involves more than one emotion so expect at least two or more tags in one picture. Anyway, this is pretty much obvious.

If you find a repost, try to cite the source of the original picture in the notes section. For example, I found this one. As you can see I added the source of the original picture in the notes section.

Also, add "wat/what?" to the list. Already done.

Edit: In cases like this one, what tag should I use?

We should add the tag of "skeptical" I suppose. Probably deserves a "reaction:implying" tag as well; I'd think there's enough implying images to deserve its own tag.

I'd be all for moving a bunch of these to GIF or similar pages – deletion should only be a last resort. BSOD did a good job by moving that peeing fountain image to GIF, for instance.

Right now, I'm just looking for images that simply don't fit. This could probably work for this page, for instance.

Images that fit for the GIF page:

Hey this looks really good and hope the plan works. I just wanted to point something out, as much as I love anime, a lot of it is posted in the reaction image gallery when it's not a reaction image.

And now, the next part of my personal Image Excavation commences. I'm working my way up from the oldest posts to the newest posts.

Move to GIF:

That leaves me at what is currently Image 400, which works as a reaction and should stay up.

@Delta

You are now able to edit the OP so you can update that with all the tags you are using so far

And as for when you find two images in galleries that appear to be duplicates, my response would be to remove the newest one and tag the old one

@Zavok

I’m not a scrapbooker, but I would be glad to help in any way. What could I do?

I don't think there is anything you can do for now. We need people who can tag images

@nyan

This is going to take a while.

This will indeed take time and patience. That's why I wanted to start on cringeworthy first since the amount of offending images to delete there is smaller

Looks like we are getting a start on this. I'm a bit too busy to start moving images at this time but I can work on that next time I am on

I uploaded that one a while back to the Justin Bieber entry, which is appropriate. Might need a second upload to Death Note as well if you feel out of control today.

I don't see how galleries like GIF help with images like this who are MUCH better off in specific galleries related to the topic. GIF is just another dumping ground like Reaction Images, moving it to there would be pointless.

Remove or move to a specific gallery is my judgement with images like that.

Ah, great to see this happening. Important: if you don't know the source remember there is always Google Reverse image search . It doesn't always work great (especially when it comes to certain gifs), but is often a good starting point. Also, you can also get it as a chrome extension.

I really like the Idea of having it as Reaction: X as it does eliminate other unrelated things. Some other tags might be: aroused, board (though this is basically the same as tired), downvote, and tears (seeing as there can be both tears of joy and sadness).

Also, should we do anything for images that should really be in other Galleries? I'm not saying we have to move every K-On!, Ed Edd n Eddy, Lucky Star, etc. reaction into their respective galleries. Rather, things that are reaction images, but already have an entry specifically for them ( ie. George Costanza Reaction Face, Are You Frustrated?, NOPE.avi, Ha Ha Ha No, That Really Rustled My Jimmies, Didn't Read LOL, Dis Gon B Gud, etc.,) I don't think its as big of an issue, since they are technically not wrong being in the reaction face gallery, but I thought I might bring it up.

Finally, should we delete tags that say "Reaction Faces"? They really don't serve any real function. There have been many times that this is the only tag an image has and only seem to be there to show that the uploader wasn't so lazy as to not add a tag anything, but to lazy to add anything that might be useful.

Also @ RandomMan Above, I already added that GIF to Death Note a while ago as well.

@RM

Fair enough. If you can find a gallery that matches the content, best to move to that gallery.

What about gifs where it's hard to determine the category? I bring that up because that was the case with the worlds funniest gif. OP didn't know where to put it, so he put it in Reaction Images. I didn't know where to put it, so I moved it to GIF at the suggestion of another user.

@above

That image could probably go to the shitpost gallery.

But since we will have a lot to go through, I'd say save ourselves some trouble and just leave the tough ones where they are.

If you cannot decide if an image belongs or not, or where it belongs: Just leave it where it is and move on to the next.

That's a good point, even though GIF doesn't have a hundredth of the images that reaction faces has, besides it's better where it's more relevant at since I learned the hard way with the "dat ass" entry but hey that was my mistake live and learn.

Tomberry added an entry for the upvotes/downvote gifs. I guess we should add the "Reaction:not" tag to those gifs too.

Ok, so these are the tags we can use so far:

  • awe, fuckyou, faget, epic
  • omg, wtf, shock, ohshit, horror, wat
  • scared, nervous, tired, sad
  • yes, yay, joy, excited, pleased, thanks, cheers, lol
  • no, why, anger, rage, suicide

I see things are going pretty well so far; also, damn Nyancat, you're all over both Reaction Faces and Cringeworthy--I was going to start on that, but you beat me to the punch.

One thing I'm wondering is if there's a way to effectively reach the creamy centers of these galleries, because they can only be sorted so many ways. We can easily reached the most recent and oldest, but when there's thousands of images and there's only one page that keeps expanding, the computer starts to lag the further one goes down. Also, we need to speak with the major image contributors about tagging. I know Mario9199 posts new images daily, and because of that I can't really blame him/her for not tagging but it really should be done for each image.

Would it be a bad idea to make it so you need to tag an image in order to upload it? I know this could end up with some shit-tags, but I feel it would also help encourage users to legitimately tag their images.

@Deltamon wanting to get to the center of the Image Galleries

Type:" /page/page# " after the gallery URL and it should get you much deeper into the gallery
for example here's 350 Pages in: https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/reaction-faces/photos/page/350
You can thank my poor internet connection back when it forced me to click next page instead of infinite scrolling.
It should be noted though that with images added/ deleted whatever shows up on any one page number may change, and sometimes infinite scrolling doesn't want to work. However, since you can just type up the next page, it hopefully will not be a huge problem.

So as I continue looking through images I see several tags not added on the list. Guys, it's perfectly fine to make more tags, but whenever you do please mention them either in this thread or PM me about it so I can update the list for other Scrapbookers and Archivists (as well as myself) to know.

Also thank you Jacob you're a life saver.

Yeah, some of that was likely me on the day I got good internet. Some things I don't think fit great and I just kinda made a few tags that I thought would fit sorta on the fly. I'll make sure to make note of this beforehand from now on. The ones I know that I've done that are not on the list:
Reaction:Seriously?
Reaction:Annoyed
Reaction:Tears
Reaction:Awesome (I was thinking reaction:awe was referring more to a "squee" than awesome but I guess it should be merged with Reaction:Epic)
Reaction:Smile
Reaction:Love (often with hearts for eyes)
Reaction:Laugh (this could probably be merger with Reaction:LOL, but I used it for stuff that wasn't really a "laughing out loud" laugh)

I didn't think the existing ones always fit perfectly, but that may just be me spending too much time looking at expression charts instead of thinking of practicality. With the exception of smile, tears, and love I suppose it would be more efficient if the ones I made up were merged into existing categories. I should be able to get good internet tomorrow night through the week so, provided there's any work left to do, I can help much more.

I'm a scrapbooker, and I guess I could help with some tagging or removal. I feel like I'd personally be too lenient with the Cringeworthy gallery though, so I'd rather help with this one if I'm needed at all. Just looking through the gallery, I came across a few points of possible cleaning. Not sure if you guys covered them already, but this is what I found.

knowyourmeme.com/photos/677151-reaction-faces → Either remove or move to a more fitting article.
knowyourmeme.com/photos/676134-reaction-faces → Remove or put into another article.
knowyourmeme.com/photos/676086-reaction-faces → Move to the some other gallery (maybe name puns?)
knowyourmeme.com/photos/677080-reaction-faces → Move to the Reddit gallery.
knowyourmeme.com/photos/676135-reaction-faces → Move to the Expand Dong gallery.
knowyourmeme.com/photos/677115-reaction-faces → Move to either the Dafuq gallery or the Sonic gallery.

Those are just a few obvious things; these are all fairly recent pictures, not to mention all of the meticulous tagging to be done on almost the entire gallery. This is going to be a really big task (in addition to simultaneously cleaning all of Cringeworthy along with it.)

Should we create a tag for the rather creepy smiles (similar to Bueno)?
I'm referring to ones like these:

Reaction:Pleased I think works, but some of the other images that I think would fit under pleased are just normal pleased. Perhaps "Reaction:Dirty thoughts" or "Reaction:Bueno" would work?
Also I made a Reaction:Taunt tag as these images don't really fit great elsewhere, but are defiantly a reaction face. It someone thinks of a better name, feel free to edit it.

One of the reasons why people post things on galleries that doesn't belong there is because you have to practically have to visit the forums to see what belongs into a gallery and what not. A lot of users don't visit the forums. Is there something that can be done so you'd know exactly what has to go where when you start to upload an image?

Can you please explain to me what type of "reaction" those images are supposed to represent, because when someone posts something like these:

I am seriously questioning what type of "reaction" it's supposed to make me read, if any at all.

Also forum weapons =/= reaction images.

Actually, no. The entry itself explains what is a reaction face, you don't have to be a genius to know the difference between a reaction face and a normal gif/picture.

On the other hand, yeah no many people comes to the forums. People seems to avoid this part of the site for some reason.

Playbook lagged on me long before my "fourm weapons" could be presented, heck I haven't really scratched my download surface yet. And those two pics are exactly the ones I wanted to get out of the reaction images and into transformers sir.

A few things to note
Should images like this be kept? Its not a reaction "face" but is certainly a reaction image

Also, the Idea I had for the creepy smile I decided should be best kept with Reaction:Sexy, along with nosebleeds and "This is my fetish". Sometimes they don't fit it like a glove, but I don't think a new tag is necessarily needed now that I've thought it over.
Then I also made a new lewd tag and disgust tag as sorta the reverse reaction.

@Jacob meh not really, it kinda better if we stick to the strict "Face reaction images only" policy just to avoid us from undoing our purpose of this operation. Sorry but it has to be done.

On a side note: Has anyone made a "Marked for removal" tag so we can make the Mods who are participating in this activity job easier for deleting those unwanted images just sitting there or just uploaded in the gallery?

On a side note: Has anyone made a "Marked for removal" tag so we can make the Mods who are participating in this activity job easier for deleting those unwanted images just sitting there or just uploaded in the gallery?

Eh, I don't really care. It's not as big of a misuse as some others, but if deemed as "not fitting", I can mark it as being irrelevant to the gallery
Right now we're using Reaction:Not.

@Jacob, True there are alot of good reactions to save so let try a "Reaction:Category_Strip" or "Reaction:Category_Move" to hopefully spare some of those images and at least find a decent entry to place'em in. Of course it's only flaw would be the abuse we might do intentionally. Either way, it's the only alternative I can think of at the moment and anyone can just ignore this idea and throw it into the grinder, never to be used ever used again.

Another question: There are a few images that relate to people missing the joke (sometimes when an actual joke is there, and other times when its not) part of me want's to move them to the That's the Joke page. Some of them say this phrase exactly, but others are like this:

They still point out that there was a joke (at least in someone's opinion) but I don't know if it qualifies as documentation of "That's the Joke"

Also, any thought on images that we have full entries dedicated to? I've been looking in some of those galleries to see if the image is already in the galley for that image, and making a scrapbooker note of it in the notes. But should they be tagged with Reaction:Not? I've done it with a few Costanza.jpg / George Costanza Reaction Faces, but I was curious as to if everyone else thought to do it to all of them, with notes showing which gallery to move to (if not a repost).

My exact thoughts_______________________^
I was gonna suggest a reaction image entry for those non-facial reactions but I see Jacob might be on to something here.

To quote the original post "The current issue with Reaction Faces is that pretty much every image can be argued to be a “reaction image.” However, a majority of them are only usable in very specific situations."
For example this image:

might seem appropriate in response to this:

but very little else.
That image, while not as specific as the example I'm citing, is somewhat specialized compared to others. However, since right now we are just tagging things to get rid of in the future, we do have an opportunity to review what has been tagged, in case there is some disagreement.

As for the reactions images that are not "faces", I suppose I could start tagging them with "Reaction:notface" for the time being until we decide what to do with them.

@[Loli]amnyancat Wait, are you saying that none of us actually asked a mod or admin to help us with our effort? How are we this stupid?

I say we rename the entry "Reaction Images" to eliminate the possible "it's not a face" issue, because many of the images are usable in response to posts, but they either don't have a face or don't focus on it exclusively. That's what most people call them anyway (in Google's suggestions, "reaction gifs" and "reaction images" appear before "reaction faces").

All right guys, I need this cleared up.

Are these reaction faces, and if so, how?

The gallery is misused to the point where many images aren't "reaction faces". They can be put in the "gif" gallery, but I think they don't belong in the reaction faces gallery. I mean no offense to the poster of these images.

I mean, the definition of reaction face on the page is: Reaction Faces are images or animated gifs of faces that are meant to portray a specific emotion in response to something that has been said. They are commonly used in discussion threads in a similar fashion to emoticons.

I don't think these are a reaction to something said. Can someone enlighten me on this topic, because either I'm missing something or the gallery truly is misused.

@GaryTheStormtrooper
They are not. Of course some might argue that, but as a whole, most of us here want those images out of the gallery (you did read the first post right?)
However, we would like to put things in places they belong (if there is a place for them)
The top image would be moved to the Kill la Kill gallery (provided it is not already posted there)
The bottom image would be moved to either the Barack Obama or the Kim Jong Un gallery (again, provided it is not already posted there).
Also, I'm starting to flag images that may count as reaction faces, but we already have full entries on. If they are variants of that meme that are not already posted in that galley, I'm leaving a note to move to a specific gallery.

Yes, I have read all the posts. I was merely making a suggestion. It is good things are changing, hopefully all for the better.
