About

AGDQ Chair Sniffer or AGDQ 2017 Seat Sniff refers to a viral video of a man at the 2017 Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) convention getting up after the woman beside him and seemingly leaning down to sniff her seat. The video went viral in January of that year where it was largely perceived as cringeworthy online, though some viewers defend the chair sniffer and claim that he actually leaned down to pick up a dropped bottle cap, waiting until the woman left first rather than asking for her help perhaps due to social anxiety.

Origin

On January 10th, 2017, a gfycat[1] user uploaded a video, originally from a now-deleted 4chan[2] thread, showing a man at the 2017 AGDQ convention get up after a woman beside him leaves, then appearing to lean down close to her seat and seemingly sniff it (shown below).

Spread

The GIF was shared to Reddit's /r/Kappa[3] board that day after being uploaded on January 10th, 2017, as well as on eBaum's[4] world on January 12th, 2017, where it gained over 48,000 views in five years. It was also uploaded to YouTube[5] on January 15th, titled "AGDQ 2017 Chair Sniffer," gaining over 304,000 views in five years.

On July 2nd, YouTuber timma100 posted a version of the video with an additional backing track, "Bump n' Grind" by R. Kelly, featuring the lyrics "My mind's tellin' me no, but my body, my body's tellin' me yes," gaining over 166,000 views in five years (shown below).

Alternate Theory

Some viewers ascribe to an alternate theory to defend the chair sniffer, suggesting he is actually picking something up from under the chair when he leans down. In the original video, the sniffer can be seen with a bottle in his hand when he gets up. He can then be seen moving his left arm and grabbing something from under the chair at the moment of the alleged sniff. While this is used to defend the sniffer, some refute this, saying he could have purposefully dropped something to make it seem like he's picking it up as an excuse to sniff the chair, noting that he gets too close to the seat.

Some also wonder why he didn't ask the woman to pick up the item for him, although others defend this point by suggesting that the man might be socially awkward. FunHaus podcast discussed this in an October 3rd, 2020, clip from their podcast, where the members have differing opinions on it (shown below).
