Baby Platypus Sculpture is an image macro of artist Vladimir Matić-Kuriljov's sculpture of a small baby platypus made in July 2019. The image, which fooled some into thinking it was a real platypus, went viral on Reddit, Twitter and Instagram in February 2020.

Origin

On July 21st, 2019, fantasy artist Vladimir Matić-Kuriljov posted several photos of his "Stone Platypus Baby" sculpture to ArtStation.^[2] The artist commented, "Sculpted in Super Sculpey, painted with acrylics. Probably the cutest thing I ever made." (shown below). The post gained 56,900 views and 69 likes in six months.

Spread

On February 14th, 2020, Redditor i124nk8 posted a photo of the sculpture to r/photoshopbattles^[3] and gained 65,900 points (88% upvoted) in five days. Redditor Bert_the_Avenger replied by posting a photoshop with the comment "platypodes all the way down"which garnered 4,300 points in five days (shown below, left). Twitter user @BeefedUpStud^[4] shared a photo of the sculpture with the caption, "I think he looks nice" and received over one million likes in four days. Twitter user @victor_pesina^[5] replied with a Perry the Platypus, of Phineas and Ferb, inspired hat edit (shown below, right). The comment accumulated over 9,800 likes and 620 retweets in three days.

On February 17th, Instagram user possumkraton69^[6] posted the image of the sculpture with the text "Baby platypus said arm the poor" which gained over 1,300 likes in a day (shown below). StayHipp^[1] published an article on Baby Platypus sculpture memes.
