About

Egg Boy, also known as Eggboy and/or Eggboi, is the nickname given to William Connolly, a 17-year-old boy, who hit Australian Senator Fraser Anning with an egg, following Senator Anning's statement on the 2019 Christchurch Mosque Shooting, in which Anning blamed the shooting on Muslims and immigration. Videos of the egging, as well as the subsequent violent takedown of Connolly by several men on the scene, went viral, leading to a variety of remix videos, memes and expressions of appreciation for Egg Boy.

Origin

On March 15th, 2019, a shooter opened fire at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand, killing at least 50 people.

That day, Australian Senator Fraser Anning released a statement about the shooting, stating "the real cause of bloodshed on New Zealand streets today is the immigration program which allowed Muslim fanatics to migrate to New Zealand in the first place" (shown below).

The following day, on March 16th, 2019, an Australian teenager hit Senator Anning in the head with an egg. Anning, then, punched the boy in the face, and the boy was wrestled to the ground by several adults on the scene.

That day, ABC news' Henry Belot posted a video of the attack to Twitter, where it received more than 41,000 retweets, 70,000 likes and 9 million views in less than 24 hours (shown below).[1]

Additionally, Twitter user @carlyylalaa tweeted a second angle of the egging, becoming one of the first to call Connolly "egg boy." They wrote, "A teenager has egged Senator Fraser Anning following his disgusting comments in the wake of the Christchurch shooting. Australia has a new hero, thank you egg boy." The post received more than 29,000 retweets, 75,000 likes and 2.25 million views (shown below).

Many online praised the teenager for the attack, referring to him as "eggboy," while criticizing Anning for smacking the boy in the face (examples below). The hashtag soon became a worldwide trending term.[2]

A screenshot of the tweet continued to go viral throughout the weekend (shown below).

Several media outlets covered the egging, including CBS,[6] Fast Company,[7] Newsweek,[8] CNN,[9] Time[10] and more.
