About

"SugarCrash!" is a hyperpop song by musician ElyOtto that gained viral popularity on TikTok in February 2021. The song is associated with two meme formats on the app, with the more popular format, a parody of fancams, featuring a CapCut video effect that highlights the climax of the video.

Origin

On August 26th, 2020, TikTok user ElyOtto uploaded "Sugarcrash!," a hyperpop song inspired by 100 gecs, to his Soundcloud[1] (shown below).

On August 27th, ElyOtto uploaded a TikTok[2] video promoting the song that received over 760,000 views and 204,000 likes in seven months (shown below).

On August 28th, 2020, ElyOtto uploaded the song to YouTube.[3] The song then received over 8 million views on the original upload, over 19 million views on a reupload,[4] 1.5 million streams on Spotify and 42 million streams on Spotify in eight months, largely due to the song's popularity on the music streaming app.[5]

Spread

On November 4th, 2020, TikTok[6] user eda_lysyy_poletel made the earliest found viral TikTok that used the song in combination with a CapCut video effect to highlight a minor detail in an episode of the Haikyu!! anime series (shown below, left). The video received over 731,000 views and 167,000 likes in four months. The song did not spawn a defined trend until January 6th, 2021, when TikTok[7] user buninew used the effect to highlight a blemish on TikToker's ultimatevirgin's face, choosing the song to accompany the video (shown below, center). On the following day, ultimatevirgin[8] duetted the post, with the duet gaining over 146,000 views and 19,200 likes (shown below, right).
