Overview

Gus Miftah Insulting Iced Tea Seller refers to viral video of Indonesian Islamic preacher, Miftah Maulana Habiburahman, which also known as Gus Miftah on his speech, called a man who selling iced tea to insulting him, then the people around him suddenly laughing. The video gained controversy which makes Gus Miftah got cancelled while people supporting the iced tea man.

Background

Prior to December 3rd, 2024, YouTube^[1] channel PCNU Kabupaten Magelang started a livestream of Gus Miftah and others doing a preach. In 2:18:00 mark, Gus Miftah called a man who selling iced tea and water in front of him, while asking in Javanese why his iced tea didn't sell well, later he say to him rudely to sell it properly, and then the people on the stage and around him laughing. The livestream later was deleted. On December 3rd, 2024, Facebook^[2] user Rama S uploaded the clip of it to the "DokSli : Dokumen Asli" group. The video received more than 1,300 reactions in one week (shown below).

Developments

The video later gained controversies and people starting to giving sympathies to the iced tea seller man, later known as Sonhaji or Sunhaji. For example on December 11th, 2024, Indonesian outlet Liputan6^[3] published an article that listing people who donating to Sonhaji, from Indonesian celebrities, influencers, and another Islamic preacher such as Adi Hidayat who donated 50 million Indonesian Rupiah to him. Additionally, Gus Miftah giving a Umroh (Islamic religious trip) to Saudi Arabia for Sonhaji's family, according to his Instagram^[4] account (shown below).

On December 6th, 2024, CNN Indonesia^[5] published an article about Gus Miftah decided to resign from his position as Utusan Khusus Presiden Bidang Kerukunan Beragama dan Pembinaan Sarana Keagamaan or in English means "Presidential Special Envoy for Division of Religious Harmony and Development of Religious Facilities". The next day, the Indonesia Cabinet Secretariat^[6] published an article about current President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, received the resign and responded that Miftah's resignment as a form of responsibility.

Online Reactions

The video gained popular with memes mocking Gus Miftah. For example on December 3rd, 2024, Facebook^[7] user Rusnoto uploaded Fernafloo Dresses Up / My Wife's Funeral edit by recaption it to "Miftah Downfall" to the "bebek goreng h.slamet (asli)" group. The post received more than 2,500 reactions and 700 shares in one week (shown below).

On the same day, Indonesian comic artist Mice Cartoon through his Instagram^[8] @micecartoon.co.id uploaded an art of Sonhaji selling his iced tea and water bottle with caption translated in English "Better selling iced tea than selling religion!" The post received more than 60,000 likes in one week (shown below).
