About

Marriott Carpet refers to a series of jokes, memes and references to the carpet at Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia.

Origin

On August 31st, 2001, Dragon Con was held at the Marriot Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia. More than 20,000 people attended. As of 2017, it has been held there more than 15 times.[1]

On September 1st, 2013, Redditor [2] posted a photo of two people dressed as the carpet at the Marriott, calling them the "Marriott Carpet Men" in the /r/pics subreddit. The post (shown below) received more than 2,200 points (95% upvoted) and 40 comments.

Spread

Two weeks later, The Daily Do[5]t reported that the two cosplayers dressed as the carpet received a cease and desist from the makers of the carpet. The post (since deleted) was captioned:

"Of all the things to get a Cease and Desist over, of ALL the replicas I’ve made over the years, I’ve received one from Couristan Inc., designers if the Marriott Marquis Atlanta hotel carpet. Spoonflower has pulled the design, as is their right, so sorry everyone who wanted some fabric of their own!

The absurdity is palpable."

Several other websites covered the cease and desist, including The Mary Sue,[6] iO9[7] and more.

On November 26th, 2016, Meme Generator[4] published a picture of the carpet for image macros (example below).

The next year, on August 28th, 2017, the official Dragon Con Twitter[8] account posted a picture of Spider-Man wearing the colors of the carpet. The post is captioned "If it's not yours, don't touch it. No means no. Not listening will be considered harassment & dealt with:" The post (shown below) received more than 145 retweets and 300 likes in one year.

This article is so misinformed. First off, the Mariott Marquis in Atlanta hasn't had this carpet for almost two years now. Secondly, it neglects to mention that the carpet cosplayers tried to SELL fabric with the carpet pattern.
