Mariah Mallad, better known by her stage name Momokun, is a cosplayer who frequently costumes as various anime characters. In early July 2018, Mallad was accused of sexual harassment by several people online.

History

Online Presence

On November 27th, 2016, Redditor upsidedownupvotes launched the /r/Momokun_MariahMallad[2] subreddit for discussions about the cosplayer. Within two years, the subreddit accumulated upwards of 15,800 subscribers. As of July 2018, Mallad has accumulated upwards of 458,000 Instagram[3] followers and 760 patrons on Patreon.[1]

Sexual Harassment Accusations

On June 7th, 2017, YouTuber Kurt Mayer uploaded a video titled "Momokun sexually harass person at a con," in which Mallad appears to grope a man's buttocks without his consent (shown below).

On July 2nd, 2018, the @DereLoveClub[5] Twitter feed posted a promotional image for Mallad's meet and greet event at the 2018 Anime Expo convention. In response, Twitter user @BunnyAyu tweeted that Mallad struck her backside at the previous year's Anime Expo (shown below, left). The same day, Twitter user @kayyybearxo tweeted that Mallad touched her without her permission at Otakon Vegas (shown below, right).

On July 5th, Redditor FaraamKnight117 submitted a post about the accusations to /r/Momokun_MariahMallad.[4] That day, the Creators Guild announced they had canceled the meet and greet event in light of the accusations.[6] The following day, YouTuber Repzion uploaded a video titled "Momokun (Mariah Mallad) Files," in which he accused Mallad of sexually harassing cosplayers at conventions (shown below). Within two weeks, the video gained over 177,000 views and 1,800 comments.

On July 10th, YouTuber Onision posted a video titled "Momokun & The Truth About Her (Mariah Mallad)," discussing the allegations against Mallad (shown below, left). On July 13th, YouTuber Philip DeFranco uploaded a video discussing the controversy (shown below, right).
