Mary-Kate Olsen's Zoom Divorce refers to a screenshot of Mary-Kate Olsen's divorce proceedings happening over a Zoom call, which went viral on Twitter in January of 2021.

Origin

On January 13th, 2021, several media outlets reported on Mary-Kate Olsen's divorce, revealing that it would be settled over Zoom. Vanity Fair^[1] reported that everyone wore black on the call. New York Daily News reporter Molly Crane-Newman published a story to the site^[2] about the divorce proceedings on that day, along with a screenshot from the Zoom call that she was allowed to take (shown below).

That same day she posted the screenshot to Twitter,^[3] writing along with it, "First time a judge has granted me permission to “shoot” a proceeding in the pandemic and it’s a screenshot of Mary-Kate Olsen and Olivier Sarkozy’s divorce proceeding. The future is here and it’s bizarro, babe." The tweet received over 1,300 likes and 245 retweets in 2 days.

On January 14th, @tamagotchimilf tweeted,^[7] "this is an english department faculty meeting" along with the photo, garnering over 93,900 likes and 4,400 retweets in a day (shown below, right).

On January 15th, PAPER^[6] published an article detailing the memes that resulted from the image.
