About

Pink Whale Challenge is a social media game encouraging people to spread love and positivity as a reaction to the Blue Whale Challenge, a purported suicide game that began trending online in 2016. The Pink Whale Challenge mimics the format of the Blue Whale Challenge but instead encourages participants to perform various acts of kindness to themselves and others. The social game was started in Brazil in 2017 as a response to the popularity of the negative version.

Origin

The original Pink Whale Challenge began in 2017 after a Brazilian PR agent launched the Baleia Rosa[1] website (which means "Pink Whale" in Portuguese) as a way to combat the popularity of the Blue Whale Challenge among teens in the country. Much like its negative predecessor, the Pink Whale Challenge (seen below) tasks participants with 50 days of various activities, but this version instead focuses on spreading positivity through acts of kindness. Though the original site still exists, it no longer hosts the game.

Spread

On August 2nd, 2017, after a teenager in Mumbai killed themselves while playing the Blue Whale Challenge, India Today[2] covered the emergence of the Pink Whale Challenge in an article titled, "What is the Pink Whale Challenge? Can it kill its evil twin brother?"

On August 17th, 2017, the Facebook[3] page Momspresso posted about the social game, asking followers for their thoughts on the Pink Whale Challenge. The post received over 1,800 likes.

2020 Resurgence

In July 2020, the Blue Whale Challenge reemerged on social media, primarily on Discord and TikTok, resulting in the resurgence of its counterpart, the Pink Whale Challenge. On July 2nd, 2020, Twitter[4] user LeilaFlowerss shared the social game in a tweet (shown below), which included 50 daily steps for participants to perform. The post received over 5,400 likes and 2,800 retweets.

On July 3rd, 2020, Instagram[5] user cote_edits uploaded a series of images to their feed discussing the Pink Whale Challenge (seen below), receiving nearly 40,000 likes.
