Smoking Freddy Krueger is an image macro series featuring a photograph of a person in a Freddy Krueger costume crouching close to the ground and smoking a cigarette. Online, people use the image to express contemplation and regret.

Origin

On March 10th, 2015, Imgur ^[1] user sgt3386 shared the image in a collection of photos from PAX East 2015. The post received more than 9,700 views (shown below).

Spread

On October 20th, 2017, Twitter ^[2] user @codeinefolk shared the image with the caption, "when you spend all night chasing people in their nightmares but nobody asks you about chasing your dreams." The tweet received more than 105,000 likes and 54,000 retweets before being deleted (shown below, left).

Following the post, others began using the image with various captions. For example, Twitter^[3] @YoungLito tweeted the image with the caption "When u been killing all these hoes but still feel empty inside." The tweet received more than 125 retweets and 100 likes in less than three years (shown below, center).

On October 21st, Imgur^[4] user GeoffRyder edited the @codeinefolk tweeted to read, "Been chasing people in their dreams so long I forgot to chase my own." The post received more than 199,000 views in less than three years (shown below, right).
