Crab Champions is an action roguelike and looter shooter video game developed by Irish DJ and indie developer Noisestorm. The video game is a spin-off of Noisestorm's viral song Crab Rave and was released on April 1st, 2023.

History

On April 1st, 2019, Irish DJ Noisestorm announced[1] Crab Champions, an action roguelike and looter shooter game inspired by Noisestorm's viral song "Crab Rave," posting a trailer for the game to YouTube (shown below). On April 2nd, Noisestorm confirmed[2] that the project was not an April Fools' joke.

On April 1st and 2nd, Noisestorm created social media pages for the game,[3][4][5][6][7] posting updates about the development. On April 1st, 2020, Noisestorm released[8] a gameplay trailer for the game, announcing the early access release on Steam for August 20th, 2020.

On August 12th, 2020, Noisestorm announced[9] that the early access release was postponed, writing that he needed more time to finish the game to a high standard.

Release

On April 1st, 2023, Crab Champions was released into Early Access.[10] A release trailer for the game premiered[11] on the same day (shown below).

Gameplay

Crab Champions is a third-person action roguelike shooter with both single-player and multiplayer modes. The player controls a crab able to wield a variety of available weapons to fend off hordes of enemies, also crabs. The game heavily focuses on smooth rapid movement and gunplay.

Upon the Early Access release, the game had two modes: 1-4 player PvE and racing. The game features 3 biomes and 12 highly customizable weapons.

While Noisestorm composed a new EDM soundtrack for the game, "Crab Rave" will not appear in it to avoid copyright claims from the label when the footage of the game is uploaded.

Reception

As of April 2023, the game was ranked "Overwhelmingly Positive" (98% positive) on Steam[12] with over 5,000 user reviews.

Fandom

As of August 28th, 2020, Crab Champions social media pages on Twitter, Facebook and TikTok had over 44,600, 15,300 and 14,100 followers, respectively. A dedicated subreddit for the game had over 3,200 subscribers.

As of April 14th, 2020, Crab Chamions Twitter, Facebook and TikTok pages had over 46,100, 16,000 and 20,700 followers, respectively, and over 4,900 followers on Reddit.

Crab Rave

Crab Rave is a house song composed by Irish electronic music producer Noisestorm and released by Monstercat in 2018. Since its initial release, the song and its video have seen use in mashups, video edits and remixes, along with adding unfitting captions to the tone of the video.
