Gummo is a 1997 experimental film directed and written by Harmony Korine. The film takes place in the small town of Xenia, Ohio, that was struck by a tornado years prior to the story, focusing on the adolescents and teens who live there and their anti-social behavior in a town that never fully recovered from the effects of the natural disaster that fell on the town. The film's cult status has garnered a significant following online.

Gummo made its premiere at the 24th Telluride Film Festival on August 29th, 1997. The film was picked up for distribution by Fine Line Productions and received a limited release in theaters in the United States.

Reception

On a budget of $1.3 million, Gummo grossed $116,799 at the box office. The film holds a 36% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 55 reviews.[1] On the same site, the film holds a 73% audience rating based on over 22,000 votes. The film holds an aggregated score of 19/100 on Metacritic, based on 15 reviews, showcasing an overwhelmingly negative dislike towards the film by critics.[2] Rotten Tomatoes consensus states that "Gummo's bold provocations may impress more iconoclastically inclined viewers, but others will find it hard to see past writer-director Harmony Korine's overwhelmingly sour storytelling perspective."

Despite the negative reception from critics, filmmakers were more positive towards the film. German filmmaker Werner Herzog praised the film, showcased in a conversation with Gummo's director, Harmony Korine.[3] The film has also been showcased on the film website They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? on their list of 1000 Greatest Films.[4]

Fandom

Over the years since its release, Gummo has garnered a reputation as a cult film and has developed a following online. Fanart and retrospective reviews have popped up online.
