About

I Don't Care If You Win, I Just Need X To Lose, also known as General Hux Losing is a phrasal template format that became popularized on X / Twitter In late December 2024 using a memorable quote from the 2019 science fiction action film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker "I don't care if you win, I need Kylo Ren to lose." Online, the phrase is used in memes as an exploitable image macro via caption changing where the meme creator replaces "Kylo Ren" for a character, movie, or personality that is hated, even though the winner could also be potentially someone or something the creator is not fond of.

Origin

On December 20th, 2019, the film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was released. In the film, the character General Hux betrays the First Order and utter the phrase "I don't care if you win, I need Kylo Ren to lose." The scene was later uploaded to YouTube[1] on May 24th, 2022, by user @TheManinBlack9054, which amassed more than 17,000 views and 361 likes in three years.

On January 24th, 2021, an unknown Imgflp[2] user posted the template and earliest mention of the "I don't care if you win, I just need X to lose" meme. (seen below)

Spread

In the following years, the General Hux losing meme sparked many variations and usage as an exploitable meme, especially on X and Reddit, to mention a person, character, country or anything that the user hates and does not want to see it succeed. For instance, on July 8th, 2021, Reddit user u/swimmers0115[3] posted a version of the General Hux losing meme, replacing some of the words in the original phrase to comment on the football rivalry between Italy and England. The post (seen below) amassed more than 4,800 upvotes and 182 comments in four years.

The internet rn: I don't care if GameStop wins. I need Wall Street to lose.

On January 14th, 2025, X[4] user @darnthatdave posted a version of the phrasal template, mentioning the 2024 Emilia Pérez film. The post (seen below) amassed over 1.5 million views and 67,000 likes in a week.
