Spread
That day, a thread about the comic was submitted to 4chan's /co/ (Comics & Cartoons) board, where it received more than 500 replies before being archived on Fireden.[4] In the post, the OP refers to SweetBeans99 as "New Guy asshole," referring to the artist's New Guy webcomic.
Meanwhile, Twitter user @NUTTTMANRETURNS[3] posted a comic in which the art supplies store clerk is fired after the incident, along with the description "made a cute lil follow up" (shown below). Within 48 hours, the tweet garnered more than 5,000 likes and 280 retweets.
On April 9th, Twitter user @chippledipple[2] posted a parody version of the comic with the description "relatable artist comic" (shown below). Within 24 hours, the tweet gathered more than 23,000 likes and 3,500 retweets.
That day, a post about the controversy titled "starving twitter “artist” 👩🏻🎨makes comic about the struggles shoplifting the bare essentials to survive🥺🥺 and gets baselessly attacked by capitalist bootlicking trolls" was submitted to /r/Drama.[1]
