The air fryer is beginning to close is a phrase which aims to ridicule the tactical and strategic failures of Russian forces during the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. It is a variation of the idiom tightening the net and presumably refers to the Russian attempt to conduct a cauldron battle manoeuvre in Ukraine's eastern region of Donbass.
A cauldron battle is defined by a fighting party being surrounded on at least three sides.[1]
It can be assumed that in order to mock the Russian performance, due to their number of well-publicised setbacks during the invasion, an air fryer is used to describe the shape instead of a cauldron. The joke exists in different versions where a vast number of actions are described.
Origin
The meme has its origin in a thread on 4chan's /k/ board where a user replied to a post containing a battle map depicting the ongoing attempt to perform the aforementioned manoeuvre.[2]
