About
Wee Granny is a Scottish grandma who went viral for a video in which she wishes everyone well during the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020. The video which was posted by her granddaughter to Twitter gained millions of views within the first few days of posting.
Origin
On March 31st, 2020, Twitter user @islaanne1 tweeted a video of her grandmother with the caption, "Got this update from my wee granny 93 and still going strong" (shown below). In the video, Wee Granny says "Hello everybody, I'm still here. I tell you I'm like a bad penny, there's no getting rid of me. I hope you're all keeping well and doing what you're told. Keep to the rules and you will all be fine, it will all pass." The video gained over 8.1 views, 485,300 likes and 83,500 retweets in two days.

On March 31st, Twitter user @SenverDammy[2] responded to the video saying, "Can we please get updates from #WeeGranny like, daily?! She legit made me feel better than anyone yet in this catastrophe. Go Granny!!" (shown below, left). The replied received over 8,700 likes in two days. The next day, Twitter user @SerKeithofDow[3] tweeted, "When you wonder why #WeeGranny is trending and then you click the video and are filled with joy" (shown below, right). That same day, Redditor jamtart68 reposted the video to r/Scotland[1] and received over 460 points (99% upvoted) in a day.
The next day, Twitter user @shabana_can tweeted, "Twitter can be so scary and overwhelming right now but it’s also where I find reprieve and laugh and commiserate with my virtual friends. So just want to say Thanks and we will get through this as #WeeGranny told us. And we will be better for it ❤️ love you!" (shown below).
