Overview
#WhoIsBeck is a Twitter hashtag campaign launched after alternative rock artist Beck Hansen was awarded Album of the Year at the 57th Grammy Awards in late February 2015. Beyoncé fans who were upset by her loss began tweeting the hashtag to express their lack of appreciation for Hansen and their disappointment with the award decision.
Origin
On February 8th, 2015, the 57th Grammy Awards were held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California,[5] where the Album of the Year award was given to Hansen for his album Morning Phase, beating several others including Beyoncé Knowles' self-titled album. As Beck went on the stage to receive the gramophone-shaped trophy from his fellow rock musician Prince, Kanye West popped up on stage unannounced and began approaching the microphone, shortly before shaking his head in jest and returning to his seat, reminiscent of his interruption of pop star Taylor Swift during the 2009 MTV Music Awards.
Spread
That evening, BuzzFeed posted a compilation of notable tweets made my individuals who had not heard of Beck prior to the event.[2] On February 9th, the keywords "Who Is Beck" began trending on Twitter, which was noted by several websites, including Billboard,[1] Brooklyn Vegan[3] and IB Times.[4]
In the coming weeks, Viners began posting videos using the hashtag to express their disappointment with the Grammy Award decision (shown below).
