After four years of being played on repeat for the youngest of YouTube viewers, "Baby Shark Dance" has officially done it: the catchy nursery song about a family of sharks has become the most watched video on YouTube in history. The song replaced the 2017 international hit "Despacito" to take the number one spot with over seven billion views.

The dethroning took place on Monday, just four days after "Baby Shark Dance" surpassed the seven billion views mark. Right now, the nursery song sits at 7.043 billion, with "Despacito" lagging slightly behind at 7.038 billion views.

The music video for the children's song, which supposedly originated as a campfire song or chant some time in the 20th century, was uploaded by the South Korean education brand Pinkfong in June 2016. In the live-action/animated video, several kids in shark costumes lipsync a catchy song about a family of sharks, with the said family of sharks swimming in the background.

In 2017, the video went viral in Indonesia, followed by several other Asian countries with the #BabySharkChallenge hashtag.

On January 8th, 2019, "Baby Shark" entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 32, causing some confusion on Twitter. Back then, the song had "only" 2.1 billion views.

Some two years later and five billion views more, "Baby Shark" has made YouTube history by replacing the 2017 hit song Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee. Who will be the bigger fish next time?
