Former One Direction frontrunner Harry Styles chose Mitski as the opening act for his 2022 tour, however, Mitski's songs and performance style seem to be lost on many of the young fans who claim she "traumatized" them with her sexual gestures.
Now, Mitski's real fans are taking to TikTok and Twitter in an attempt to set things straight.
Of course, there were many positive affirmations of girlboss icon Mitski's opening performance at Styles' concert given her large and loyal fanbase, but some members of the audience did not like the sexual gestures a part of her live set.
In recordings taken by TikTokers, Mitski is seen doing mock oral sex and playing with the microphone provocatively. To some, this apparently left a bad taste in their mouth when all they wanted to see was Harry.

One TikTok in particular, which has since been deleted, asked its viewers, "Anyone else traumatised by mitski at Harry styles?," followed by multiple crying emojis. The aforementioned video was screenshotted and reposted to Twitter where it left a bad taste in people's mouths.

The "traumatised" TikToks also inspired reactions on TikTok from Mitski stans who felt the remarks were insensitive and unfounded. Of course, real Mitski fans were present at the concert too and filmed these "disrespectful" members who talked during her performance and only realized who she was when her most notable song "Nobody" came on.
The discussion spiraled going into the days following, even spreading to Twitter once again.

Inherently, the Mitski fans started comparing her performances to Harry Styles', claiming they are equally sexual and traumatizing. This double standard they highlighted attempted to prove some sort of hypocrisy in the fanbase.

As the tour continues, it will be interesting to see how the Harry Styles fans treat Mitski going forward.
Will they be as "disrespectful" or will they understand the larger context? Additionally, will more discourse surface from these "traumatized" TikTokers defending their statements, or do they inherently agree with the backlash levied against them?
