A 17-year-old internet mystery was solved this morning when "The Most Mysterious Song On The Internet," a tune whose title and artist have confounded internet users since 2007, was identified.

The previously unknown song is "Subways of Your Mind" by the band FEX.

Redditor marijn1412 of the /r/TheMysteriousSong subreddit claims credit for the discovery. Through some archival work in German newspapers, they discovered FEX, a band that "won a talent contest in Bremen in September of 1984," and that "their music was described as Rock with Wave and Pop influences."

The user contacted a band member listed in the article and asked if they had any old FEX material. Lo and behold, "The Most Mysterious Song on the Internet" had been found.

The German article that cracked the case

The post-release journey of "Subways of Your Mind" started in 2007 when spiritofradio.ca user bluuue asked if anyone recognized a song he'd recorded off German radio. It was posted to YouTube in 2011 as an "Unknown song," and then the search intensified in 2019.

The subreddit "/r/TheMysteriousSong" was created to track it down, gaining over 55,000 subscribers in its lifetime. For years, multiple leads on the mystery song's origins resulted in dead ends, and much of the sub began to focus on uncovering other lost songs.

Still, a dedicated cohort kept chipping away at the Most Mysterious Song mystery and, according to other commenters, few were as dedicated to the cause as marjin1412, who received widespread congratulations from the community for finally cracking the case.

According to an email sent to marjin1412 by FEX member Michael Hädrich, FEX is planning on reuniting and rerecording "Subways of Your Mind."
