NFT Profile Pics Gone

There's been plenty of dancing on the graves of NFTs by critics after it was reported that nearly all of them are worthless, but adding insult to injury, Twitter will no longer allow the former Web3 craze's biggest champions to flaunt their NFTs on their profiles, as yesterday, the company announced that it would no longer support the hexagonal NFT profile pictures.

The feature was previously only available to paid subscribers of Twitter and was deeply maligned by users who had no interest in NFTs or crypto art, akin to how the blue checkmark is seen by many today.

Even Elon Musk himself voiced his displeasure at the feature when it was first announced.

While many celebrated the move, others lamented the decision and expressed their disappointment in losing the feature.

It seems Twitter is gearing to usher out its brief relationship with NFTs to some degree while it preps for more flirtation with its current Web3 darling, AI. Its statement says its vision for 2024 is to implement peer-to-peer payment services and an expansion of AI tools.

The move is yet another reminder that the NFT craze appears to be on the downswing after it was seemingly everywhere in the early 2020s. The fad inspired Meta to experiment with NFT integration, but even it pulled the plug on that in early 2023 when it seemed clear the moment had passed.
