Oh there's been plenty of bitching about that. I saw someone on twitter trying to heavily imply that Steven was supposed to be a girl but CN forced the Crew to change Steven into a boy. Naturally, Ian called it out and said that Steven has always been planned to be a male.

Well, when a large vocal part of a fandom is from Tumblr it's easy to kinda sorta see this happening. It's unacceptable, but still.
